Extreme fatigue is a symptom of both fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).
According to the Arthritis Foundation, many people who have fibromyalgia could also fit the fatigue symptoms of CFS. In fact, these two fatigue causes are so similar that even respected doctors have confused them. In addition to common symptoms such as headache, dizziness, impaired concentration, anxiety, depression, bowel issues, and feeling fatigued all the time, fibromyalgia and CFS have a shared demographic: women of middle age.
There are some notable differences between CFS and fibromyalgia symptoms to help you determine which condition may be contributing to your extreme tiredness. Fibromyalgia is more common and includes chronic muscle fatigue and distinct points of pain, typically developing after a physical or emotional trauma.
On the other hand, CFS is characterized by overwhelming weakness and fatigue, with some possibility of pain. CFS typically results from a viral infection such as influenza. In addition to being tired all the time, individuals with CFS can experience inflammation in the form of a fever or swollen glands.
While there is no definitive cure for fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms, certain practices can help you banish pain and fatigue over time. I invite you to incorporate the following practices into your daily routine:
- Sleep: This may seem obvious, but getting plenty of sleep can help you overcome constant fatigue. Ironically, fibromyalgia and CFS can cause you to experience sleep disturbances, so it’s important to optimize your sleep routine. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, and bringing electronics into the bedroom to help you sleep better.
- Exercise: When it comes to exercise, it’s important to diagnose the cause of your severe fatigue in advance. Women with a fibromyalgia diagnosis often see an improvement in symptoms through regular aerobic exercise. However, women with CFS typically are told to keep exercise moderate to avoid exacerbating their CFS symptoms.
- Thyroid exam: While a low thyroid has not been identified as the cause of fibromyalgia or CFS, it can cause people to feel very fatigued. Having your thyroid checked can help you determine if it is one of your reasons for feeling tired all the time.
- Nutritional supplements: Nutrient deficiencies can cause you to feel tired and fatigued. By taking supplements, you can replenish your missing nutrients, jump start your energy levels, and feel more awake.
