Are Food Sensitivities Keeping You Awake?

August 4, 2018

You may already know that you can eat certain foods for insomnia...

But did you know that, on the other hand, food sensitivity has been identified as one of the causes of sleeplessness?

The link between food and insomnia goes beyond caffeine-rich foods such as coffee, tea, and Coke products.

If you have food allergies or sensitivities, you may experience trouble sleeping as a result. This is because food intolerance produces an inflammatory reaction in the body when you consume foods you are allergic to, and the resulting inflammation leads to poor sleep. For example, you may experience the following types of allergic reaction:

- Headache or migraine

- Sinus congestion in the head

- Digestive inflammation causing acid reflux, bloating, and gas

- Skin rash or itchy skin

- Compounded reaction with estrogen, resulting in hot flashes and worsened PMS symptoms

These uncomfortable reactions can cause you to have ongoing problems sleeping at night, especially if you are unsure which foods are prompting such a response.

To avoid food allergies and insomnia, it’s important to avoid the foods that trigger an allergic response. Take note of how your body reacts to certain foods. Common food intolerance symptoms include:

- Bloating

- Water retention

- Constipation

- Diarrhea

- Heartburn/acid reflux

- Heavy feeling in the stomach

Common food intolerances can also be linked to the presence of mold and mycotoxins in food. Mycotoxins are chemical toxins produced by fungi, and can prompt an inflammatory response similar to food sensitivity. Strawberries, grapes, raisins, and cantaloupes are all foods that can be high in pathogenic mold and affect your digestive tract.

Additionally, it’s important to limit your intake of foods that can lead to a sleepless night. Here are everyday foods that you may not know can contribute to sleep problems like insomnia:

- Aged, cultured, fermented, or smoked food: Items like cheese, red wine, and sauerkraut contain histamines that aggravate your digestive and hormonal systems, resulting in insomnia symptoms such as anxiety.

- Alcohol: While an effective relaxant, the effects of alcohol can wear off within a few hours so that you cannot sleep at night.

- Nightshade foods: Potatoes, peppers, eggplant, and tomatoes contain natural pesticides that are toxic to our cells. They can overstimulate the nervous system and result in anxiety, which is one of the common insomnia causes.

- Sugar and refined carbohydrates: Sugars and carbs not found in natural whole foods can cause a blood sugar spike that results in an adrenaline rush and high levels of cortisol. This can cause you not to sleep well.

As a holistic wellness practitioner, I am pleased to provide food sensitivity testing to help you identify signs of allergies. I will work with you to discover the root cause of your sleep deprivation and avoid all future sleep disturbances so that you can drift off into a stress-free dreamland each night. You are welcome to review these sleep tips from Danielle Vintschger, contributor to the popular blog A Madison Mom, to improve your sleep routine.
