Improve Your Sleep by Improving Your Sleep Environment

August 1, 2018

Are you often unable to sleep?

Common causes of sleeplessness include underlying health causes, genetics, stress, and a poor sleep environment.

If you know that your health is sound, consider the atmosphere in your bedroom and look for components that are causing you to have poor sleep.

It’s possible that your bedroom is one of the hidden reasons for insomnia. Many people bring electronics into bed or use their bedrooms as multi-purpose space without realizing that these habits contribute to severe insomnia. If your sleeping space is full of distractions, it’s no surprise that you are having problems sleeping.

I invite you to improve your bedroom space and avoid trouble sleeping with the following sleeping tips:

Avoid Bright Lights for Natural Melatonin

Electronics and too much light through the windows are common insomnia causes. Your brain relies on darkness to signal the release of melatonin, the sleep hormone. If you are staring at a bright phone or laptop screen, or have a bright light outside your window, your brain is unable to release proper amounts of melatonin for sleep. Keeping electronics out of your bedroom and putting up blackout curtains can help you to sleep better.

Enjoy Sunlight as a Natural Sleep Aid

Just like darkness helps with melatonin, it’s important to receive enough light exposure during the day to avoid sleep deprivation. Light exposure in the morning helps your body to maintain a proper melatonin cycle so that you feel sleepy at night.

Keep Cool to Sleep Well

When the temperature in your bedroom is too high, it can trigger insomnia symptoms and fragment your sleep. When the weather is warm, be sure to run your air conditioning at night, or else crack a window, to maintain an ideal sleeping temperature.

Maintain a Consistent Sleep Schedule

Even if you go to bed late or experience sleep disturbances, set your alarm for the same time every day. Getting up at a consistent time allows your body to settle in a rhythm and help you sleep.

Optimize Your Bedroom Interior for Sleep

It’s hard to sleep well every night if your bedroom also serves as a home office or gym. Improve sleep by associating your bedroom with nothing but rest. Remove all clutter and distractions so that you no longer need help sleeping.

Try Aromatherapy While You Sleep

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils and an oil diffuser to infuse the air with a pleasant and soothing scent. Natural oils interact with your sense of smell to balance your mind, body, and spirit. Sandalwood, ylang ylang, frankincense, and lavender oil are natural cures for insomnia because they induce relaxation and lower stress levels. You can run your essential oils diffuser while you sleep, or even before bed while you are reading or taking a bath.

Insomnia can have a profound effect on your life, but it doesn’t have to be an ongoing problem. With effective insomnia treatment, you can spend every night sound asleep, and wake up every morning feeling refreshed. I invite you to review these sleep tips provided by Fern Weis of Ridgewood Moms.
