Is Your Sleep Disrupted by Mycotoxins?

July 30, 2018

Are you having trouble sleeping at night?

Do you struggle with unexplained insomnia some or most nights a week?

The culprit could be mycotoxins in your home.

Mycotoxins are poisonous chemical compounds produced by certain species of fungi, especially those found in crops. Adverse health effects of mold include suppressed immune system, oxidative stress, and depleted antioxidant levels.

Mold and mycotoxins enter the home through contaminated food or water damaged areas of the house. Strict agriculture procedures have significantly decreased the amount of mycotoxins in coffee, rice, grain, and other harvested crops, but it’s impossible to completely eradicate the presence of toxic mold.

While not everyone becomes ill as a result of mycotoxin exposure, it is possible to develop a condition known as mycotoxicosis. Symptoms of mycotoxins in humans depend on the types of mycotoxins, and can include dizziness, brain fog, weakness, chronic fatigue syndrome, nausea, and trouble sleeping.

Mycotoxicosis in humans typically occurs when individuals have a heightened risk. You may need to seek mycotoxicosis treatment if you have spent a lot of time in a building with water damage, eat a diet high in sugar and low in nutrients, or are exposed to a high level of environmental toxins.

A 2015 study published in Environmental Research found a link between damp housing and sleep problems by studying 1,719 children. The study found that the children exposed to mold were having problems sleeping, struggling to stay asleep, and sleeping less than nine hours a night.

So, why are sleep disorders one of the main toxic mold symptoms? Mycotoxins trigger an inflammatory response that causes respiratory issues, headaches, irritation in the eyes and throat, and nasal swelling. Any combination of these reactions can lead to little to no sleep.

If you suspect your reasons for insomnia involve mycotoxins or black mold exposure, it’s important to take steps to limit mycotoxin production. Fix water leaks as soon as possible and remove any window condensation, especially in the bedroom. Because the most common issue is mycotoxins in food, be careful with your food storage. Keep grain and rice products stored in dry, cool conditions and purchase coffee without mycotoxins. Click here for additional tips to remove mold from your home, provided by Ridgewood Moms.

Individuals who have encountered mold can benefit from mycotoxin testing to protect their wellbeing. As a certified functional medicine practitioner, I can help remediate the effects of mycotoxins on human health. Together, we can screen for early symptoms and discuss your options for insomnia treatment and mycotoxin removal.

After identifying the source of your poor sleep, I would be happy to discuss natural remedies for insomnia to help you return to a proper sleep schedule. Many people find that, in addition to addressing underlying causes such as mycotoxins, they benefit from healing practices such as aromatherapy, Reiki, and meditation.
